Missouri Statewide Wildlife-Vehicle Collision Study

This Wildlife Vehicle Collision Reduction Analysis & Hot Spot Mitigation Measure Feasibility Study was initiated by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) to analyze reported wildlife-vehicle crashes and identify hot spots, rank these hot spots for feasibility for creating wildlife crossing structures, and visit the top 10 areas to identify mitigation and accommodation strategies. The study was support by Missouri Department of Conservation and the Federal Highways Wildlife Crossing Pilot Program. The consulting company HDR is the prime on the contract, and the Wildlife Connectivity Institute is a sub-consultant to HDR. The study is underway and should be complete by March 2026.

The field crew of HDR ecologist and engineer, Missouri DOT ecologists, Missouri Dept of Conservation ecologist, and the Wildlife Connectivity Institute’s Dr. Cramer. They visited the top 10 wildlife-vehicle collision hot spots to assess them for actions to make the road more permeable and safe for wildlife and drivers.
